The January edition of Great Lakes Brewery's Project X takes place tonight and there will be a number of special beers on hand to sample from, including one of the Toronto Beer Week HomeBrew Competition winning beers that was commercially brewed at Great Lakes.
Kama Stoutra Indian Imperial Stout won a gold medal at the 2011 TBW HomeBrew Competition and moved onto the final rounds for additional prizes. One of those prizes was the opportunity to brew the beer on a larger scale at Great Lakes with brewer Mike Lackey, which Zach Weinberg, who brewed the beer, won.
Weinberg of Toronto Brewing (homebrew supply store) wowed the final judges of the competition as they were amazed at how complex the beer was with all the spices used in its creation (madras curry, cayenne pepper, cumin and toasted coconut). Together, Lackey and Weinberg brewed the beer at Great Lakes back late November and tonight it is ready to be released to Project X members.
Here is the video of the two men talking about the beer. Weinberg also provides a brief description of the beer.
Here is the complete list as taken from Great Lakes Facebook page - In bottles - varying quantities:
Feature - Kama Stoutra
IPAs - Karma Citra, I saaz her standing There
Saisons - No Chance With Miranda, The Ginga Ninja, Same Ol' Citrasaison, Saison du Pump, Rye did the Chicken?
Porters - Currently Incarcerated, Harry Porter
Big Beers - Vanilla Imperial Stout, Apocalypse Later, Barley Wine, A Waste of Men.....
ALSO- Sour Mash, Belgian Rouge, Black Wit.

Amsterdam Bottles Smoked Porter - Winning Entry From Toronto Beer Week Homebrew Competition
The first ever Toronto Beer Week (TBW - held back in September) held a Homebrew Competition that attracted homebrewers from across Canada.
Kyle Teichert, from Egmondville, ON, wowed the judges with his Smoked Porter recipe, going on to win the judging.
Toronto's Amsterdam Brewing Co. offered to brew the winning entry on a commercial scale, and yesterday, December 16, 2010, the Smoked Porter was bottled and will be available for purchase from the brewery very shortly. There are only a couple of kegs floating around - 1 is heading to Toronto's Burger Bar in Kensington and 1 to Chancey Smith's in London, ON
Teichert, who isn't big on words, had this to say about winning the first annual competition. "It was unexpected because I had just started homebrewing. It was great to see my beer brewed here at Amsterdam and I think it's great for homebrewers. Also, it's neat to know people will be drinking my Smoked Porter. Thanks to Amsterdam and the TBW organizers."
Amsterdam's Blake van Delft said, "It's been a fun experience doing this beer and I think people are really going to enjoy it (Smoked Porter)."
Here are some pictures that were taken yesterday during bottling.

Way Overdue Toronto Beer Week Thoughts

I believe I've mentioned it here before, but before going on, and for the sake of transparency, I should state again that I was/am on the Executive Committee for TBW and one of its co-founders.
A Humble Start
Beginning back in March of this year, a number of individuals starting discussing the idea of holding the first Beer Week in Toronto but it wasn't until a trip to the Craft Brewers Conference in Chicago that John Bowden, Cass Enright and myself actually started to get serious about it. We talked to some Ontario brewery representatives who were present in Chicago and we talked with some British Columbia brewers to see how the Vancouver Beer Week was shaping up (VCBW took place in May, after the Craft Brewers Conference). Upon returning to Toronto the TBW talk heated up and a committee was formed to start the process of getting the event up and running. We believed Toronto was ready for it and could handle a full week of beer events.
After months of meetings, hitting the pavement and working on logistics, our committee brought beer to the forefront in Toronto from September 20th to the 26th. It was the main focus in the city. The mainstream media (Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, National Post, NOW) all jumped on board and provided us with great coverage. There was also great support from online media (blogTO, beer and food bloggers) that we were ecstatic about.
Here are some of my Pro's and Con's
Pro's
Passports - The TBW Passports were a great success from our point of view. There were many licensees, breweries and drinkers that commented on the passports with overwhelmingly positive remarks. Each passport, in case you couldn't get your hands on one, featured a map of Toronto on one side that was highlighted with each participating licensee and brewery and the other side featured small bio's of each participating business.
These passports can be used for pub/restaurant suggestions as they cover the city. So, if you're heading to the west end and you're not sure where to find a good bar with a good craft beer selection, use the passport to see what's in the area.
Licensee Participation - This was key for the success of the week. When we were planning TBW we set a goal of signing up a minimum of 30 licensees - we ended up with almost 50! The response from the publicans surprised even us in the beginning. And after the week was complete, those we've followed up with were more than happy with the turnout their establishments received.

Troy, Fred (Charlevoix), Daniel (Garrison), Cass Enright |
Quality of Events - The Ontario Craft Beer Week (June 2010) featured a number of events throughout the province but I felt that many of them lacked substance. Don't get me wrong, there were a number of very good and well organized events during their week, but TBW events had a lot of meat on the bone. New beers, brewers in attendance, beer dinners with international breweries, tastings with beer educators and writers, festivals and much more. There were events for everyone, across the whole city.
The TBW Logo - It will define the week. You see that logo and you are immediately reminded of the week.
TBW Homebrew Competition - Rob Symes, another individual on the Executive Committee (myself, Symes, Enright, and Bowden) developed the TBW Homebrew Competition, organized the judging, got great prizes and worked with Amsterdam Brewing Co. to get them to brew the winning entry on a commercial scale in February. He did an amazing job for a first year competition and the homebrewers responded by entering over 90 beers!
Con's
......I'm still trying to think of something.
No, in all seriousness I felt that the week went better than even our committee expected it to go. The people of Toronto, once we got our message out to the public, wanted this. The support from the public was unbelievable. We heard so many stories of licensees seeing new faces, getting returning customers, and at one place in particular, the cask ale continuing to run dry every other day.
One con that I personally have is the TBW website. I was the person that created and maintained the website this year. We used a free service and I believe it showed. The events had to be entered manually everyday, in the same format, and the application we were using provided me with numerous headaches when entering in information. Next year we'll have a 'real website'.
Thanks
I would also like to thank our great sponsors who provided artwork, advertising and more. Thanks to NOW Magazine, TAPS The Beer Magazine, Bar Towel.com, Industry Images, Canada Coaster, Igniter and Axis Gear.
And a very special thank you to the Honourable Steve Peters (Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario) who tapped the Mill Street cask to kick-off TBW - to Adam Grant of the Monks Table: A Gourmand House for hosting the TBW Media dinner in August to help spread the word! - and to Mill Street brewery for hosting the media launch.

![]() |
Troy, Rob Symes (TBW), James Watt (BrewDog), John Bowden (TBW) |
After the dinner, belly full of beer and rich food, I rolled down the road to C'est What for the Beer Writers In The Round event. We had a great turnout! Bigger than I thought we would get. A bunch of us (beer writers) sat around talking about beer and sharing our own personal beer experiences for two hours, and during the cab ride home I thought to myself that it would be great it the lot of us could do that every six months or so; sit around with some beers and chat.
Anyways, here's what you'll find happening throughout Toronto tonight (27 events). I plan on stopping by the Victory Cafe and Kilgour's myself!

Toronto Beer Week Events
A whole week has passed since I last updated the blog! Things have been very buys lately. The judging for the 8th annual Canadian Brewing Awards (CBAs) took place last weekend, over two days, and it was the largest competition in Canada to date. Over 390 beers were submitted by 76 Canadian breweries and the winners will be announced next Friday at the CBA gala.
TAPS Media, my employer, operates the awards, which eats up a lot of time in preparation. We had some great judges who were very dedicated to the two days and some great volunteers who helped wash glasses, ran beer trays to tables and helped with the tabulation of the scores.
I have been part of the CBAs for four years now (official pourer) and I can honestly say that the quality of beer produced in this country is terrific, and evolving at a healthy pace. I can remember the submissions from three years ago and last weekend's judging proved that much has changed in only a matter of years. Styles that weren't around in Canada three years ago, Kolsch for example, had numerous entries this year, as did Imperial IPAs and Kellerbiers. It was great to see.
Where am I going with this? Oh yes, when the office lights turn off for the night my attention turns to Toronto Beer Week, where as most of you know I sit on the Executive Committee, and let me tell you - It's a lot of work. We have been thrilled with the amount of events that have poured into our inbox. 99% of them have been posted on the TBW website (more posted this morning and listed here), and we expect just a few more to trickle in last minute.
Also, the response for the TBW Homebrew Competition has been phenomenal! We are going to hit 100 entries! 100. A group of us our getting together this weekend (between all the festivities that barVolo has planned with Dieu du Ciel) to start the judging. We never expected that the competition would be this successful, so we are extremely thrilled.
Anyway, head over to the TBW website and click on events. We have 120 events listed as of today at locals all over the city!!

Toronto Beer Week (TBW) is a collective series of events dedicated to the celebration and advancement of the craft beer movement. TBW will showcase authentically brewed and flavourful beer, the talented brewers who create them, and the licensees who proudly support them. It’s all about good beer – no bland, mega beer permitted!
The event will kick off the day after the Toronto International Film Festival comes to a close, and will feature dozens of events held at some of the city’s finest restaurants, bars and pubs. Event examples might include:
- Beer dinners
- Feature cask ale tastings
- Brewing demonstrations
- Neighbourhood pub crawls
- Beer trivia evenings
- And much, much more
The TBW team will work with breweries and licensees to develop unique events that suit their independent character. We are working hard on some exciting ways to promote the Week and encourage awareness of the incredible beers that are now available in Toronto. Updates and more information can be found at www.torontobeerweek.com or on our Facebook page.
